Concerning death, and the refusal to assign meaning

10:1

In that season, a man of the village fell ill,

and his strength left him quickly.

10:2

His family called for Christopher,

hoping for words

that would steady their fear.

10:3

Christopher came and sat with them,

but he did not speak of causes.

10:4

He did not say,

"This is punishment,"

nor did he say,

"This is purpose."

10:5

He held the man's hand

and said only,

"You are not alone."

10:6

When the man died,

some wept,

and some were angry.

10:7

They asked Christopher,

"Why did God allow this?"

10:8

And Christopher answered,

"I do not know."

10:9

They pressed him, saying,

"You speak boldly on other matters."

10:10

And he replied,

"Where I do not know,

I will not borrow certainty."

10:11

He said,

"Meaning given too quickly

often serves the living,

not the dead."

10:12

Then he helped dig the grave,

and said no more.

10:13

And I learned that faith may include silence,

and that honesty honors God

more than explanation.
