Concerning scandal, and what it reveals

16:1

I asked Christopher,

"Why does this trouble the people so greatly?"

16:2

And he answered,

"Because scandal reveals more about the watcher

than the watched."

16:3

He said,

"A man is not disturbed

by what he does not fear within himself."

16:4

"Those who are at peace

look and move on."

16:5

"But those who carry shame

see it everywhere."

16:6

I said,

"Should one then avoid scandal for the sake of others?"

16:7

And he replied,

"One should avoid cruelty,

not visibility."

16:8

"For hiding truth to protect fear

only teaches fear to rule."

16:9

He said,

"Do not seek to offend,

but do not live in service to offense."

16:10

"Scandal fades when it is neither fed nor fought."

16:11

"And if it does not fade,

it still teaches."

16:12

I asked,

"What does it teach?"

16:13

And he answered,

"Who is ready,

and who is not."

16:14

Thus I learned that peace is not agreement,

but endurance without resentment.
