Episode #19: 1 Christopher - Chapter 19 - Spread

Concerning refusal to spread, and the danger of carried wisdom

19:1

After those who cast aside garments had settled nearby,

some urged Christopher to travel.

19:2

They said,

"Others would listen if you came to them.

Your way could take root elsewhere."

19:3

Some offered him shelter,

others food,

and some even coin,

that he might speak in distant towns.

19:4

They brought this also to me,

saying,

"Convince him,

for he listens to you."

19:5

So I asked Christopher,

"Why do you remain,

when many would receive you gladly?"

19:6

And he answered,

"Because wisdom carried too far

arrives without context."

19:7

He said,

"A seed taken from its soil

may grow,

but it will not teach the land it came from."

19:8

"And those who hear me without seeing my life

will keep only my words,

and turn them into rules."

19:9

He said,

"What is learned by watching

cannot be taught by telling."

19:10

I asked him,

"Then why speak at all?"

19:11

And he replied,

"Because some come close enough

to see."

19:12

He said,

"If I travel,

I will be followed."

19:13

"And if I am followed,

I will be copied."

19:14

"And if I am copied,

what was once lived

will become a costume."

19:15

He said,

"I do not wish to be repeated.

I wish to be understood."

19:16

Then he added,

"A truth that depends on my presence

is not yet strong."

19:17

"And a truth that cannot survive my absence

is not worth spreading."

19:18

So Christopher remained where he was,

not from fear of the road,

but from care for those who walked it.

19:19

And I understood that he guarded his stillness

as others guard doctrine.
