Concerning realization, and the knowing of one's place

20:1

As years passed,

I saw that the village had grown calmer.

20:2

Some accepted,

some ignored,

some quietly changed.

20:3

And I said in my heart,

"They understand."

20:4

Yet I felt no peace.

20:5

I returned to the words I had written,

reading them again and again.

20:6

And I said to Christopher,

"I see no error in them,

yet I know I am lacking."

20:7

He took the pages in his hands

and returned them to me.

20:8

He said,

"You see the words.

You do not yet see the heart."

20:9

I asked,

"Then why can others live this,

and not I?"

20:10

And he answered,

"Because you were sent to witness,

not to arrive."

20:11

He said,

"Not every man is a student.

Some are recorders."

20:12

"And there is no shame in this."

20:13

Then he added,

"Your wife listens with her whole being.

You listen with care."

20:14

"Both are gifts,

but they are not the same."

20:15

And I understood then

that I had mistaken proximity for transformation.

20:16

I was not called to live as Christopher lived,

but to tell truthfully

how he lived.

20:17

And this knowledge gave me rest.
