Written by the wife of the author

My husband grew ill in his later years,

and he knew that his strength would not return.

Our children sat with him,

unashamed of their bodies

and unafraid of one another,

for this had been their way since youth.

My husband watched them

with love and quiet sorrow,

for he knew he had recorded wisdom

that he himself had never fully lived.

Before his death,

he asked me to preserve his words.

What my beloved husband never understood

was not a failure of faith,

but of listening.

He listened with his ears,

and he was faithful in this.

But Christopher taught us

that truth enters through the heart,

or not at all.

My husband did something none of the village could do:

he truly befriended Christopher.

When my husband died,

Christopher came and stood beside me.

He had always said

that one should not fear death.

Yet that day,

I saw Christopher weep for the first time.

And I knew then

that wisdom does not harden the heart,

but makes it capable of love.

Notices from the editors of the second edition

No dates are given on when the story occurs, but we believe, based on the publication date of the first edition, that the first chapter occurs in 1887, and the epilogue is in 1902.

The most common question about the first edition received is "Where is chapter 13?"

But in the late 1800s, people were afraid of number 13, so not chapter 13 was found.

The first edition didn't have verse numbers; they were added for the second one and do include verse #13.

The chapters also didn't have names; these were added in this edition.
