<-#5: 1 Christopher - Chapter 5 - Imitations#7: 1 Christopher - Chapter 7 - Fear ->

Concerning restraint, readiness, and the danger of symbols

6:1

Later I asked Christopher,

"Why do you live as you do,

if others should not follow?"

6:2

And he answered,

"They may follow - but not blindly."

6:3

"For every way of life,

when turned into a symbol,

becomes a trap."

6:4

He said,

"Clothing can hide cruelty,

and nakedness can hide pride."

6:5

"Neither saves a man."

6:6

"What matters is whether a man knows

why he does what he does."

6:7

He said,

"Restraint is not denial.

It is timing."

6:8

"A child is restrained from fire,

not because fire is evil,

but because the child is not ready."

6:9

"So it is with all freedoms."

6:10

He warned me, saying,

"If you teach men to remove symbols

before they understand them,

you will leave them unguarded."

6:11

"And if you replace old rules

with new ones equally rigid,

you have taught nothing."

6:12

He said,

"Do not tell men to live as I live.

Tell them to live honestly."

6:13

"For an honest clothed man

is nearer to God

than a dishonest naked one."

6:14

Then I asked,

"Why do you continue,

knowing this danger?"

6:15

And he answered,

"Because some will see past the form

and learn the heart."

6:16

"And for those few,

it is worth being misunderstood."

6:17

Thus I learned that wisdom is not loud,

nor eager to multiply itself.

6:18

It waits for readiness,

and accepts solitude.

6:19

And Christopher remained as he was,

not as an invitation,

but as a witness.
