Concerning restraint of speech, and the holiness of silence

8:1

After this, I asked Christopher,

"Why do you answer some questions

and leave others untouched?"

8:2

And he said,

"Because not every question

is ready for words."

8:3

He taught me, saying,

"There are truths that ripen only in quiet."

8:4

"If you speak them too soon,

they turn bitter."

8:5

He said,

"Silence is not absence.

It is restraint."

8:6

"A man who fills every space with speech

often hides from listening."

8:7

I asked him,

"Do you not fear being misunderstood?"

8:8

And he replied,

"To fear misunderstanding

is to hunger for control."

8:9

He said,

"If I am understood by all,

I have spoken too simply."

8:10

"For wisdom that fits every ear

has been flattened."

8:11

He warned me,

"Do not correct men

when curiosity has not yet replaced defense."

8:12

"For correction offered too early

becomes humiliation."

8:13

Then he said,

"God Himself is often silent,

and no one calls Him absent for it."

8:14

I saw then that Christopher chose silence

not from weakness,

but from care.

8:15

And I learned that speech is a tool,

not a duty.
