Concerning illness, fear, and the testing of mercy

9:1

In those days, sickness came upon the village,

not suddenly,

but house by house.

9:2

Children grew weak,

and the old breathed with effort,

and fear spread faster than the illness.

9:3

Some said,

"This is judgment."

Others said,

"This is fate."

9:4

Many came to Christopher,

asking him to explain the cause.

9:5

But he did not speak of blame.

9:6

He said instead,

"Wash.

Rest.

Care for one another."

9:7

He showed them how to keep distance

without cruelty,

and closeness without recklessness.

9:8

He tended the sick when asked,

and stepped away when refused.

9:9

He never forced help,

nor shamed caution.

9:10

Some were troubled, saying,

"You speak little of God in this."

9:11

And Christopher answered,

"God is not absent

when mercy is practiced."

9:12

He said,

"Fear seeks meaning.

Care seeks action."

9:13

He urged the strong to protect the weak,

not by bravery,

but by patience.

9:14

And he reminded them

that to preserve life

is not cowardice.

9:15

Some recovered,

and some did not.

9:16

Christopher did not explain the difference.

9:17

He only stayed present.

9:18

And I saw that faith is not proven

by survival,

but by how one treats others

when survival is uncertain.

9:19

Thus illness tested the village,

and revealed its heart.

9:20

And Christopher remained,

not as a healer,

but as a witness to mercy.
