2 Christopher - Chapter 10

On the first failure elsewhere, and the quiet weight of being right

10:1

The next harvest came unevenly.

10:2

To the east, fields thinned early.

To the south, grain burned before it filled.

Men returned from distant towns

speaking of dust on the tongue

and seed that never rose.

10:4

Here, the harvest was smaller than before,

touching stalk and stem,

as if listening for pain.

At supper, a man asked him,

"Will it be worse next year?"

10:12

Christopher answered,

"Yes."

10:13

Another asked,

"How much worse?"

10:14

He replied,

"Enough to reveal habits."

10:15

They pressed him, saying,

"Should we warn others?"

10:16

Christopher said,

"Those who listen are already watching."

10:17

And those who do not

will not hear words

over hunger.

10:18

That winter,

the wind stayed late.

10:19

And the ground did not rest.
