Episode #32: 2 Christopher - Chapter 11 - Rolling Weed

On the arrival of the rolling weed, and paths left open on purpose

11:1

It began with movement.

11:2

At first, only one or two,

rolling clumsily across bare ground.

11:3

Children laughed

and chased them.

11:4

Christopher watched

and did not smile.

11:5

Within weeks,

they came in number.

11:6

They gathered against fences,

pressed against walls,

and piled like drifted snow.

11:7

Men cursed them

and spoke of burning everything at once.

11:8

Christopher said,

"Not yet."

11:9

He walked the fields

and marked empty lanes

between the plots.

11:10

Some protested,

"You are wasting ground."

11:11

Christopher replied,

"I am giving the wind somewhere to go."

11:12

He ordered the lanes kept bare,

packed hard,

and cleared often.

11:13

When the tumbleweed rolled,

it followed the emptiness.

11:14

There, it could be cut,

broken,

or burned safely

when the air was still.

11:15

A man asked,

"How did you know they would gather?"

11:16

Christopher answered,

"Anything that rolls

seeks what does not resist."

11:17

Another asked,

"Why not fence them out?"

11:18

He replied,

"A fence only teaches them where to stop."

11:19

He said,

"Fire must be invited,

not surprised."

11:20

So they burned in narrow places,

early in the morning,

when the wind still slept.

11:21

The fires did not spread.

11:22

And the fields did not burn.

11:23

Some called this luck.

11:24

Christopher called it patience.

11:25

That season,

the town learned

that emptiness,

placed wisely,

can be a defense.
