14:1
The wires came first,
thin and uncertain,
stretching from pole to pole
like a thought not yet trusted.
14:2
Men stood beneath them
and argued softly.
14:3
Some said,
"It will change us."
14:4
Others said,
"It will make us dependent."
14:5
And some asked,
"What problem does it solve
that hands cannot?"
14:6
At the same time,
Myriam spoke to me at night.
14:7
She said,
"My body is strong still,
but the years have weight."
14:8
She said,
"The soil gives less each season,
even when we listen."
14:9
She asked,
"Should we bring another child
into a world that tightens?"
14:10
I had no answer.
14:11
The council came to Christopher
and asked about the wires.
14:12
They said,
"Will this help the fields,
or only the houses?"
14:13
Christopher walked the length of the line
and touched the pole with his palm.
14:14
He said,
"A lever does not replace the arm.
It multiplies it."
14:15
They asked,
"And if it fails?"
14:16
He replied,
"Then we learn its limits."
14:17
That night,
Myriam asked me again,
"Are we strong enough?"
14:18
I said,
"I do not know."
14:19
We went to Christopher together.
14:20
She asked him plainly,
"Is it faith to stop,
or faith to continue?"
14:21
Christopher looked at her carefully
and did not answer quickly.
14:22
At last he said,
"Faith is not refusing tools."
14:23
"It is refusing to worship them."
14:24
He said,
"Electricity will not save you.
Children will not save you."
14:25
"But both may serve life
if welcomed without fear."
14:26
He said,
"Do not add what you believe
will replace care."
14:27
"But do not refuse what may help
because you fear change."
14:28
The wires were connected
the following week.
14:29
The lights came on softly,
not like fire,
but like patience.
14:30
That same season,
Myriam placed my hand on her belly
and smiled.
14:31
Neither decision was loud.
14:32
Yet both restored a quiet confidence
that tomorrow
was still invited.
